Breakfast at the hotel. We cross Northumberland, catching glimpses of the Angel of the North before entering Scotland. The afternoon culminates in an Old Town pub with a dram of single-malt whisky, haggis with mashed turnip, and a slice of smoked salmon. Overnight in Edinburgh.

Breakfast at the hotel. The route takes us into the Highlands: the glacial valley of Glencoe, waterfalls bursting from the heather, and, with luck, Highland longhorn cattle. At Loch Ness, we embark on a mini-cruise opposite Urquhart Castle; the onboard sonar monitors for “unusual movements.” En route to Glasgow, we skirt Ben Nevis and the Trossachs lakes.
