DAY 2: WEDNESDAY - BANGKOK

After breakfast, visit three of the city's most unusual Buddhist temples. We'll begin with Wat Traimit, located at the edge of Chinatown on Yaowarat Road, near Hualampong Railway Station. Wat Traimit houses the world's largest solid gold Buddha, measuring almost five meters tall and weighing five and a half tons. The tour continues to Wat Pho, Bangkok's largest temple, home to the enormous reclining Buddha and the Chedis of the Kings. It is one of the city's largest temples, famous for its gigantic reclining Buddha, which measures 46 meters long and is covered in gold. Transfers are included.

Next, you will visit the Grand Palace, undoubtedly the city's most famous landmark. Built in 1782, it served for 150 years as the home of the King of Thailand, the royal court, and the administrative seat of government. The Grand Palace in Bangkok is an ancient building that continues to impress visitors with its beautiful architecture and intricate details. Within the complex lies Wat Phra Kaew – the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (officially Wat Phra Sri Rattana Satsadaram) – considered the most important Buddhist temple in Thailand. It is here that the country's most revered Buddha image, meticulously carved from a single block of jade, is enshrined.

It is estimated that one person died for every sleeper along the track, the reason behind its nickname ‘the Death Railway’. We will take a short train ride along the railway, where you can appreciate the beautiful scenery along the river while contemplating its tragic past. Breakfast at the hotel. Today we will visit Mae Chan, the ancient center for silversmithing. It is now a hub for trade between the Akha, Yao, and Lisu tribes, where you can see members of different ethnicities interacting and trading. Next, we will visit a Karen village to learn about this famous hill tribe, the largest ethnic minority group in Thailand. Originally from Tibet, this tribe migrated to what is now Myanmar about two thousand years ago. During the 18th century, political conflict and persecution are believed to have been the main reasons for their mass migration to northern Thailand, where they now reside without an official state. The tribe is most recognized for the Kayan women, a subgroup of the Po (Red Karen), whose necks are adorned with brass rings. Sometimes starting as early as age five, the constant pressure pushes their collarbones and ribs down, giving the impression of an elongated neck—the reason behind their nickname, "giraffe women." We'll have lunch at a local restaurant before taking a traditional boat trip on the Mekong River, whose waters form a natural border between Myanmar (formerly Burma), Laos, and Thailand. Before the tour ends, we'll visit the Opium House Museum to learn more about the history and social and individual consequences of this narcotic that has plagued Asia for centuries.

Departing from Chiang Rai, we will travel for approximately 3 hours by road to Chiang Mai, stopping at Wat Rong Khun (nicknamed the White Temple), designed by a famous Thai artist. Upon arrival in Chiang Mai, we will have lunch at a local restaurant before continuing our excursion to the Wat Doi Suthep complex; a magnificent temple located at an elevation of 1,000 meters on the slopes of a forested mountain. Requiring a climb of 306 steps with Naga serpent handrails, this sacred temple offers a spectacular panoramic view of the city, as well as a wealth of images and frescoes for those willing to undertake the climb. Continue to the hotel for check-in.

In the evening, you will enjoy a Khantoke dinner: the traditional style of dining in Northern Thailand. Seated on Mon Sam Lieung (traditional Thai triangular mats), the meal will be served at low tables while you enjoy a selection of Northern Thai cultural performances, including the enchanting Fon Lep (nail dance), Ram Dab (sword dance), Fon Thian (candle dance), and Ram Wong (circle dance).
